Red Tag Removal

In Ontario, Canada, red tags are issued by licensed gas technicians or inspectors when a gas appliance or system is deemed unsafe or non-compliant with safety standards. These tags serve as a visible warning that there is a potential hazard, and immediate action is needed to resolve the issue. Red tags are a serious indication that the gas installation or equipment poses a risk to the occupants' safety and should not be used until repairs are completed and the issue is rectified. If left unaddressed, red tags can lead to disconnection of gas services, fines, or further safety violations.

What Are Red Tags?

A red tag is a notice placed on gas appliances or systems to indicate that they are in a hazardous condition. Red tags can be issued for various reasons, ranging from minor non-compliance issues to major safety risks that require immediate action. There are two main types of red tags in Ontario:

Type A Red Tag

A Type A red tag is issued for severe safety hazards that require the gas supply to the appliance or system to be shut off immediately. Examples include a severe gas leak, faulty venting that causes carbon monoxide buildup, or an appliance with a cracked heat exchanger. When a Type A red tag is issued, the gas technician will immediately turn off the gas supply to the affected appliance or even the entire building to prevent accidents.

Type B Red Tag

A Type B red tag is issued for less severe infractions that do not require immediate shutdown but still pose a safety risk if left unaddressed. These issues must be repaired within a specified time frame, after which a follow-up inspection is required. If the issue is not resolved within the given time, the gas service can be disconnected.
